- In English folklore, a barguest is a sort of mountain fairy appearing in the form of a black dog or bear. The sound of rattling chains follows them, and they are considered an omen of death.
- In his past, he used to be Hecate's servant. This possibly has some mythological origins—Hekate was a Greek goddess known for her dog familiars. As mythological barguests are more widely known as black dogs, this may be a reference to that original interpretation. Additionally, Hecate uses the pen name H. L. Hound for her writing work. Hellhounds are the Greek guardians of the underworld, and a barguest can be considered to be the English folklore equivalent.
- This relationship is referenced in his Charge Skill line, Hecate's Junction.
- The clover necklace he wears is a good luck charm created by Hecate in hopes to improve his luck.
- On the release of the AR Equipment banner, his necklace's charm on his original and was changed from a gold cross to a gold four-leaf clover. Both release-day AR Equipment starring Barguest ( Bears of the Mountain and Like a Box of Chocolates) used his redesign. The original sprites can be seen here.
