"Hotei is an aspiring comedian Transient belonging to the Arakawa Wanderers Guild. A perennial wanderer with no permanent place to lay his sandals, he once sailed on the Golden Treasure Ship with Ebisu, Benten, and the other Lucky Seven in his homeland. He has taken on the motto that ""fortune comes with laughter"" ever since being summoned to Tokyo, though his talent in encouraging either is subject to doubt. The large Sack Sacred Artifact he bears has the ability to change its size and softness as he wills it, allowing him to form it into a cushion to relax on or a sleeping bag to spend the night in when he lacks a bed. It is also the centerpiece of one of his classic tricks, where he wraps himself in a manju and pops out. According to Ebisu, however, the Sack had no such function back when he was on the Treasure Ship. On the personal relations side, Hotei seems less fond of a certain someone who's always laughing on his own, regardless of whether or not someone is around telling jokes."

He is a wanderer with no permanent residence and once rode on the Treasure Ship with Benten and Ebisu in their home world. After being summoned to Tokyo he's made "luck comes along with laughter" his motto, but his talent at that is questionable. The carry-all bag Sacred Artifact Hotei possesses has the power to change its softness and size at will. By using this ability, he can turn the sack into a soft cushion to wrap himself up in when he doesn't have a bed. His trademark gag Omanju is to jump out of the bag after wrapping himself up in it. But according to Ebisu, back when they were on the Treasure Ship Hotei's bag didn't have that power. He doesn't get on well with people who laugh constantly even when alone or when no one tried making them laugh.

荒川ギルド・ワンダラーズに所属する、お笑い芸人志望の「転光生」学生。定住しない放浪気質で、かつて故郷ではエビスやベンテンたちと共に宝船に乗っていたこともある。東京に召喚されてからは「幸福は笑いと共にやってくる」をモットーにしているが、そちらの才能には疑問符がつく。このホテイが持つ頭陀袋の「神器」は、その大きさや柔らかさを自由自在に変えることができる。これを応用することでふかふかなクッションに変え、寝床がない時はこれで身をつつみ夜を明かす。包まってから飛び出す一発芸「おまんじゅう」は彼の持ちネタだ。だが、エビス曰く宝船にいた時は、この頭陀袋にそんな機能はなかったらしい。笑わせてもいないのに、誰も居なくても勝手に大爆笑し続けるような相手はちょっと苦手であるそうだ。

"The Sack Sacred Artifact he bears on his back with care has amazing powers. It can store physical objects as well as things without physical shape or form, such as smiles, laughter, and even fortunes. Such is its Rule. Furthermore, anything in the Sack can be pulled out at will and given to others. Only Hotei is able to place things into the Sack or take them out, though. Part of the Sacred Artifact's Rule comes from the powers of a monk said to have wandered the world of Penglai. This monk would pull from his Sack that which the poor needed, and he would take whatever objects of gratitude they wished to give him and put those into his Sack before continuing his journey. The Sack would swell with both gratitude and mercy, but in his mind it weighed as light as ever."

Hotei's Sacred Artifact is the important-looking sack he hauls on his back. It has the ability to collect even immaterial things like people's smiles as good luck. It is also said to spontaneously produce things that can be given to people. And furthermore, Hotei is the only person who can take things in and out of the bag. This artifact has the power of a priest who traveled to the other world of Hourai mixed into it. The bag can give necessities to the poor and receive goods from people as thanks. Then, what gets put in the bag is sent off to go on its own trip. The bag is filled with the gratitude and compassion from people, but for some reason Hotei has no memories of feeling any weight from it.

彼が大事そうに背負っている頭陀袋の「神器」。それは、物に限らず人々の笑顔のような形のない存在ですら「福」として収納することができる「権能」を持つ。そして更に、任意で取り出して人々に授けることができるという。なお、中身の出し入れは、ホテイにしか扱えない。またこの「神器」には、異世界ホウライを旅したといわれる僧侶がもっていた「権能」も交じりあっている。貧しい人々のために袋から必要なものをだして授け、そして人々から御礼として物品などをもらう。そしてまた、袋に入れて旅立つという生活をおくっていた。その頭陀袋は人々の「感謝」と「慈悲」に満ちて膨れ上がるが、なぜか重さは感じられなかったと記憶している。
