Translated from Japanese Originates from the other world Yggdrasil. A goat beastman Transient with pitch black fur. He is renowned for his experience in pulling a chariot in his previous world, and now he waves a pointer around as part of the Santa School's Reindeer department. It hasn't been long since he became a teacher, so often one can say he hasn't gotten used to teaching. He still wants to be an active member, but he has a non-healing wound on his leg so he has retired. His previous master was an outrageous hero, so his influence has made his nature a bit rough. When he gets fired up his mouth shoots off before his head and he acts before thinking; he also forgets about his injury and starts to run, which leads to painful feelings. After becoming a teacher he has taken to minding his tone and believes himself to behaving like an intellectual, but onlookers see him as a meathead. Recently students have pointed this out to him, so he's worried about it a little.

Official English "The Boots Tanngrisnir wears together comprise his Sacred Artifact. Their Rule grants their wielder the lightning speed and titanic strength to propel them to their destination. It is a power that originally stemmed from Tanngrisnir's old comrade-in-arms, which represents his own true strength when supported by a partner. They will carry him to the furthest horizons or the highest skies if need be, and with their support, his leg injury no longer prevents him from running. Accordingly, he is considering making use of them to enter active reindeer service. The tremendous thunderclap they produce, however, runs a high risk of violating the stealth clause of the Santa Principles, so he is currently working with Headmaster Ded to try and find a solution. His past experiences make him nervous around anyone with a voracious appetite, especially those who would gnaw a meal down to the very bones."

However activation of the artifact causes the sound of thunder to resound, and since this is highly likely to conflict with the main principles of Santa, he's in the middle with consulting with the principal. Due to past connections he holds a dislike towards people with such forceful appetites that they would break open bones and suck out the marrow.

Translated from Japanese The transport specialist and hotblooded teacher who works in the reindeer department at Tokyo Santa School. He looks like an intellectual, but he's a spirited meathead just like his old boss. This time he's been sent as Shinjuku Mountaineering Club's advisor from out of the school to investigate the strange mountain where Santa lives. He seems rather fired up since there's a formal competition set up with a well known mountaineering club as he remembers his younger self. Back in his home world, Tanngrisnir would always get into sled-pulling contests with his partner as one of Thor's underlings. But due to taking an injury to his bone marrow even the power of regeneration could not heal, Tanngrisnir has become unable to keep running for long periods of time. As a teacher of the next generation, he considers what sorts of injuries his students might risk and tries to avoid them beforehand. In Tanngrisnir's home world of Yggdrasil, there is a System based on the branches of the world tree, or in other words divergence. Under this faith, pruning off as many branches as you want is fine, but harming the one in charge as in the injury above is right out. Due to that, Tanngrisnir has the important part of instructing Shinjuku Academy's mountaineering club president as his divergence point approaches.

Personality

Tanngrisnir is somewhat calm and collected, though he is a meathead at times. Despite being a relatively new teacher, he sometimes drops his polite manner of speaking to a rougher style when he gets in the heat of the moment. Either way Tanngrisnir genuinely cares about the younger generation about their dreams and ideals and their wellbeing. Tanngrisnir also tends to talk about Thor and a strange habit of offering stew to people. Throughout Ikebukuro Christmas Concerto, he's shown himself to be experienced in combat and strategy to an extend as being from Yggdrasil. His boot Sacred Artifact being unable to activate held him back for a long time, but thanks to the efforts of Pollux, Melusine and the Protagonist, he is able to activate it once again in the final moments of the race.

Notes

• Tanngrisnir is based on one of the two goats that pulled the god Thor's chariot in Norse mythology; Tanngrisnir (Old Norse "teeth-barer") and Tanngnjóstr (Old Norse "teeth-grinder").
  • This coincides with his sacred artifact which are the boots that give him a speed boost and appear to manifest itself as blue chariot wheels to the side of his feet.
• His Charge Skill line, Vinr Tanngnjóstr, can be translated to "Friend of Tanngnjóstr".
• The symbol represented on each of the shoulders of his waistcoat is called the Triquetra, or the Trinity Knot. It symbolizes a lack of beginning or end, eternal life, represented by a continuous line looping around itself. The symbol was originally Celtic, but due to interaction between Vikings and people of Scotland and Ireland, many Celtic symbols such as the Triquetra were adopted by Norse culture.
• His leg injury may come from the original story, in which Thor would kill and eat his chariot goats when he needed food, then magically revive them from the remaining bones. One day when Thor shared his goats with hungry peasants, one of Tanngrisnir's bones was broken to get to the marrow inside, leaving his leg permanently injured upon revival.
