Notes
- Ebisu is based on the deity of the same name. He is the kami luck and good fortune, patron of fishermen, and a member of the Seven Lucky Gods.
- Of the seven, he is the only one who has originated from Japan without any influence from Hinduism.
- Ebisu is often depicted holding a fishing rod and a large red tai (sea bream).
- The tai is homonymous with medetai (congratulations), making it a staple of Japanese weddings and other major celebrations that invoke good fortune.
- Ebisu is a marebito, or visiting deity. These deities come from an undefined place across the sea or deep in the mountains. If received properly, the marebito are said to return the host's kindness with gifts.
- In Ebisu's case, he is often caught by fishermen in their nets as he floats from place to place. When hauled in he turns into a stone that, if properly worshiped and given offerings of drink and fish, will bless the crew with fortunate catches.
- Ebisu is sometimes identified with whales because, like him, they come during a season bringing bounty then depart again to the depths of the sea.
- His relationship with Hephaestus and Ifrit are due to all three being discarded to some extent.
- Both Ebisu and Hephaestus were discarded by their parents.
- Conversely, both Ebisu and Ifrit were thrown out to sea.
