Although they are stray summons, his relationship with them is more akin to a father than a summoner. In spite of his rough appearance, he's really kind of a weakling. The true Motosumi is a friendly young man who loves children and would really rather just get along, but the thuggish face he was born with caused him endless grief throughout his life as other students took him for a delinquent and either ostracized him or started fights with him constantly. Over time Motosumi adopted the style and mannerisms of a punk, dying his hair blond and perfecting his sneer over long practice sessions, in hopes that he might finally be left alone if he looked tough enough. Unfortunately, this only exacerbates the problem.

"Motosumi takes on the Setsubun festivities in an effort to give the babies he is raising a broad cultural education. Donning the ogre costume he got from a friend, he braces himself for the beans they will throw at him, but the babies are more absorbed in eating the symbols of Setsubun. Though living the life of a layman, Motosumi is, at his core, a monk. His deeply-engrained spiritual teachings make an appearance when he hums no lullaby, but offers readings of scripture to the orphans who had been left on the temple doorstep. He bears the role of sheltering and raising those tossed aside by society, as well as taking on their sins. Motosumi dislikes those who use parenthood as nothing more than a tool."

Notes
- His full name is Motosumi Tohno
- Zenki and Gouki, the oni babies, seem to play a pun with their names. Zenki is the one in his baby carrier at the front while Goki is the one on his back. (前鬼 could be translated to "Front oni" if it's done for each character, while 後鬼 could be "back oni" if done the same way)
- Curiously enough, Goki is the one at the front of the Setsubun illustration.
- Motosumi shows up in one of the loading screens, looming over a small Kagutsuchi, while Zenki displays what seems to be a bag of baby food. Motosumi seems to state it's for him to "Become bigger" (大きくなれ), while the bag states it is for baby jam, from 7 months and older (赤ちゃん甘んべい. 7カ月から)
