In English folklore, Barguest is a sort of mountain fairy appearing in the form of a black dog or bear. The sound of rattling chains follows them, and they are considered an omen of death.
In his past, Barguest used to be Hecate's servant. This possibly has some mythological origins—Hekate was a Greek goddess known for her dog familiars. As mythological barguests are more widely known as black dogs, this may be a reference to that original interpretation. Additionally, Hecate uses the pen name H. L. Hound for her writing work. Hellhounds are the Greek guardians of the underworld, and a barguest can be considered to be the English folklore equivalent.
The clover necklace Barguest wears is a good luck charm created by Hecate in hopes to improve his luck.
