Roppongi Tycoons - Prologue

Chapter 5: Tycoons Prologue - City of the Chosen - Roppongi- is the fifth accessible Chapter of the Main Quest, beginning in the Shinjuku and Roppongi Ward. It consists of five scenarios, most of which have multiple parts.

In this chapter, Claude hires the Protagonist and their newly established Summoners guild to help spy on Hakumen, a high ranking member of the rival Tycoons guild. However, the plan goes awry when a coup by Tycoon members Ophion and Lucifuge puts everyone at risk.

Scenarios

City of the Chosen, Roppongi (1) (Academy-Roppongi)

A few days after helping out the Missionaries, the Protagonist has been attending classes with not much else happening. After Kengo and Ryota get in trouble for slacking off in Unknown icon.pngMononobe's class, they and the rest of the Summoners run into Andvari, who claims that they haven't fully paid him for helping get them established since setting up one safe house depleted the money the guild had. However, Andvari claims he has a way for them to get the money they need, something that, despite Shiro's attempts to get them to accept that he worked out the details, makes the guild suspicious.

Cut to restaurant. Upon arriving at the meeting site, a fancy restaurant, Kengo realizes the client they've been hired to help is Claude, having previously been brought their during his time with the Berserkers. Sure enough, Claude and Snow are waiting for them. Snow informs them that Claude wants the Protagonist to pose as his 'plus one' at a party at the Tokyo Casino, a major gambling hall owned by the Tycoons, while the others infiltrate the Casino's staff in order to help spy on the Tycoons operations.

Cut to Roppongi. On the day of the mission, the Protagonist, dressed up for the party, arrives alone, as the others are preparing to infiltrate the casino. As they wait for Claude to show up, Unknown icon.pngLil' Salomon pops out, congratulating them for the effort they're putting into strengthening their guild and filling them in on the advancements Transients have made to Tokyo.

Flashback. As Shiro, Kengo, and Ryota are forced to eat elsewhere in the restaurant, Snow leads the Protagonist to Claude. After congratulating them for becoming a Guild Master and hearing their account of what happened with the Missionaries, Claude reveals he hired the Summoners in an attempts to train the Protagonist on how to navigate their way through the game, having heard of their indirect challenge against the game's core structure.

Present. As they wonder who is really behind the game, the Protagonist meets up with the others outside the Casino. After seeing them of for their part of the mission, they head to the entrance in order to wait for Claude. However, they immediately get caught up in an incident when a group of gangsters start harassing a kid, Kenta, and his bodyguard Barguest, for being near the Casino.

City of the Chosen, Roppongi (2) (Tokyo Casino)

Once the Protagonist neutralizes the last of the gangsters, they double back to check on Kenta and Barguest. While Kenta talks about Inugami, the Transient hiding in his backpack that acts like his guard dog, Barguest tells them that, around Roppongi, people who aren't rich and connected are generally treated like garbage. However, the gangsters suddenly resume their attack, despite there being no App Battle around them and using real guns. Luckily, Toji intercepts and dispatches them, though he's still visibly hostile toward the Protagonist. He explains that carrying weapons that are intended to be used outside of the App's parameters is considered illegal due to the permanent consequences they cause. However, before Toji can continue trying to remove the Protagonist's access to the App, the gangsters' backup arrive. Kenta and Barguest slip away in the confusion, leaving Toji and the Protagonist to deal with the mess.

City of the Chosen, Roppongi (3) (Tokyo Casino)

Knowing they are outmatched, the gangsters immediately call for backup, which quickly surrounds Toji and the Protagonist. Making matters worse is that Toji slips away in the chaos, leaving the Protagonist to fend for themselves. Fortunately, Claude and Snow cut the gangsters off, forcing them to retreat since they're 'on the guest list'. Claude, brushing their attack on the Protagonist off as them needing to make an entrance, ushers them into the car and passes them a change of clothes to switch with their ruined ones.

Once Snow passes an invitation to a gangster on guard duty, the car passes through a gate that doubles as an elevator. After a while, the group enters Little Tokyo, a miniature city connected to the casino comprised of districts based on the 23 other worlds. While driving through Little Land of Wa, Claude provides backstory on how the area was made and hints that there's something bigger hidden in the casino's lowest levels. As Claude and Snow leave to take a call, the Protagonist is approached by Gandharva, who, after serenading them with a musical performance and lamenting on how the locals don't particularly care how good it is, uses a rigged coin toss to to illustrate how the first-class views others in Roppongi. The conversation ends once Claude and Snow finish with their business, and the group presses on.

Den of Risk and Intrigue (1) (Tokyo Casino)

As the car Claude, Snow, and the Protagonist are in descends further into the casino, Snow takes a moment to work on the Protagonist's hair. Once Snow finishes and the car reaches the access way to the main casino, Claude reveals that the Summoners true mission is to help expose any secrets he might be able to use to their advantage and instructs them to keep their identity hidden for as long as possible.

Once the group enters the casino and the Protagonist's initial shock wears off, the group heads to a poker table, where Claude immediately takes charge. After winning a considerable amount of money, Claude decides to cash out before a woman winning big at the next table tries her luck on him. As they make their way through the casino, the owner of Tokyo Casino, Hakumen makes her grandiose entrance and heads over to Claude's group. After a brief conversation, Hakumen turned her attention to the Protagonist, whom she is immediately intrigued with. After a failed attempt to buy them off Claude, she hands them a key to one of the casino's private rooms and instructs one of the waiters, Ifrit, to handle any requests from them. However, Ifrit is hesitant to work for humans due to not having the same drive as a genie such as him. As they make their way to a side table to wait for Ifrit to get them some food, the flame genie tells the Protagonist that he's been forced to work there due to having acquired a huge gambling debt and having to give Hakumen his heart as collateral. However, as they look for some food for Ifrit, they are accosted by several ninjas similar to the ones the Protagonist saw harassing Maria. Assuming they are here to steal from the guests, Ifrit enlists the Protagonist's aid in getting rid of them.

As Ifrit and the Protagonist make quick work of the ninjas, two other ninjas, Kotaro and Hanuman are on their own mission. Pleased that the diversion unit is pulling the focus on them, they proceed to their target, but Hanuman becomes distracted by the smell of food, bailing on Kotaro as he goes to search it out. Forced to continue the mission alone, Kotaro has a subordinate tell the diversion unit to cause trouble elsewhere.

Cut to kitchen. After having gotten the staff meal he wanted upon dealing with the ninjas, Ifrit wonders why the ninjas suddenly retreated, a fact that Lil' Salomon can't figure out due to the ninja's communications being heavily encrypted. However, a surprise delivery from Ifrit's school friend Nobuharu catches him off-guard. Despite Nobuharu telling him he's only hear to help his family's liquor business after some of the staff quit, Ifrit tells him off, saying he needs to focus more on his schoolwork rather than helping his parents keep their business afloat. As Ifrit continues to prepare their room in a foul mood, the Protagonist runs into Ryota. However, to their confusion, Ryota doesn't recognize them, causing an amused Lil' Salomon to reveal that whatever Snow did to them in the car has completely changed their identity. As Iftrit leaves with the Protagonist to head to the room, Ryota bumps into Hanuman as the ninja tries to swipe some food.

Cut to private room. Ifrit leads the Protagonist into the private room Hakumen lent them and begins serving them tea. He admits that he's unused to serving someone who has no interest in gambling, and tells them that his debt problems started when he began losing money at the tables before he even knew what happened. Hakumen then took his heart as partial payment and forced him to work as a shift manager to make the rest of the money back. However, their conversation is interrupted when the girl the Protagonist saw earlier asks to stay in their room for a while, but a group of gangsters working as casino security burst in, forcing Ifrit and the Protagonist to fight them off.

Once the App Battle ends, the gangsters chasing the girl suddenly vanish, causing Ifrit to demand to know what's going on. The girl, introducing herself as Babalon, says she's there to take advantage of the guest's greed and humiliate them at their own game due to her hatred of people, in particular men, trying to force their beliefs onto others. When Ifrit voices his confusion over her motives, she reveals a startling secret about why he wound up in debt: Hakumen, obsessed with getting Ifrit's heart for its value, used her Sacred Artifact to remove his inhibitions while he was gambling, causing her to swindle him out of his heart before he even knew what happened.

Understandably pissed at the deception, Ifrit races off to confront Hakumen. Before the Protagonist can chase after him, Babalon stops them. After admitting she did it purely because she considered Ifrit among the weak deserving of her help, she turns the conversation toward the App as she's worried it'll end up being used to handicap the people not strong enough to defend themselves. Hinting that she has guessed who they really are, Babalon asks the Protagonist to join '[her] group', but the Protagonist, suspicious of her intentions, refuses, even as she baits them with knowledge that Sacred Artifacts have a tendency to extract the memories of others and can transfer the inherent knowledge and skill onto others, something she claims Claude conveniently forgot to mention to them, and chases after Ifrit.

Cut to casino. While she hosts the party, Hakumen approaches Claude with a request to help her depose Ophion from the Tycoons. However, before Claude can make a decision, Ifrit bursts in, with the Protagonist is tow, demanding that Hakumen give back the heart she stole from him. When Hakumen predictably refuses, the Protagonist, sick of her selfishness, challenges her for possession of Ifrit's heart with Claude supplying the money necessary to back the wager. Sufficiently goaded into the challenge and despite Ifrit's attempts to keep 'a guest of the casino' out of his personal business, Hakumen agrees to the wager and forces both of them into a gladiatorial fight against her personal entourage of gangsters.

Casino Royale (1) (Tokyo Casino)

As Ifrit and the Protagonist finish off the gangsters, Hakumen, realizing how skilled the Protagonist is, tips the fight in her favor by sending in more gangsters for them to deal with, then manipulates Claude into taking on a side bet. In order to make sure she wins, Hakumen then inserts herself into the fight. Despite already being worn out and knowing her entrance is an unfair disadvantage on their part, Ifrit and the Protagonist continue to push on.

Casino Royale (2) (Tokyo Casino)

Despite being worn out, Ifrit and the Protagonist continue to fight on, much to Hakuman's amusement as she continues to beat both of them down. However, as she uses the key they were after to gloat, the Protagonist takes advantage of her hubris and grabs it from her. Undeterred by this, Hakumen asks that the Protagonist return the key to her, which they surprisingly do. She then has her servants move Ifrit and the Protagonist away as she goes to collect her winnings from Claude. Locked in a cell, Ifrit laments that he didn't do more to protect the Protagonist. However, this appears to have been part of their plan, for as soon as Lil' Salomon angles them so that they aren't facing the security camera's prying eyes, they spit the key out of their mouth.

Cut to casino floor. Still believing she has won the bet, Hakumen approaches Claude to discuss being payed. Claude concedes to handing over his winnings from the night as payment for his end of the bet, but when Hakumen begins gloating that the Protagonist has become enamored with her due to her Whip Sacred Artifact's affect on their mind, Claude casually points out that her 'neckline' is providing a flaw in her logic. Confused, Hakumen grabs the keyring only to suddenly realize the Protagonist's deception: noticing how sticky the gold leaves used in the tea were after one stuck to Lil' Salomon, they covered the key she gave them earlier with them, then, with Claude using his Sacred Artifact to fuel her ego, used the slight-of-hand trick Gandharva showed them earlier to switch them when she was distracted. Embarrassed that she fell for such an obvious ploy, Hakumen demands that the Protagonist be brought to her, but the power cuts out before she can finish giving her orders. As she scrambles to find out what happened, Kotaro orders his men to incapacitate the guards. By the time the lights turn back on, it appears that the gangsters are being attacked by their own despite Hakumen's attempts to use her Whip to control them, leading her to suspect that it might be a trick by the other members of the Tycoons in order to get rid of her.

Cut to casino basement. Having escaped from their cell, Ifrit and the Protagonist head for Hakumen's personal vault in order to get the heart back. However, Lil' Salomon reveals that the communications have been going crazy since the attack started just as they reach the Gangsters blocking the vault. Attempting to tie up the gangsters as a thank you to the Protagonist, Ifrit is stopped when they notice that Kengo, having been order to grab the Protagonist while Shiro and Ryota secure their escape route, is already dealing with them. After a rushed introduction, the group proceeds to the vault.

Casino Royale (3) (Tokyo Casino)

As the Protagonist and the others fight toward the vault, the two remaining high ranking members of the Tycoons, Ophion and Lucifuge circle the outer perimeter of the casino along with Kirito, Barguest, and the rest of their forces. Despite being in clear control, Ophion is visibly annoyed that the Game Masters have crippled his ability to produce forces at will, forcing him to rely on others to do the dirty work for him.

Cut to casino basement. Just like with Babalon, the gangsters the Protagonist and their friends deal with vanish as soon as they are beaten. Before they can process what happened, an explosion rocks the casino. Shiro calls the group, informing them that he's heading toward them and that they need to keep going underground once they find Ifrit's heart. Rushing into the vault, they find the ninjas from earlier looting what valuables they can grab, including Ifrit's heart, causing Ifrit and the others to jump in to get it back.

Underground Escape (1) (Tokyo Casino)

As the group fight to retrieve Ifrit's heart, Toji has run into Kotaro and is attempting to attack him. However, Kotaro continues to taunt him, calling into question his obsession with ending the Game. He informs Toji that his employers in the Tycoons hired him to help erase any evidence of their wrongdoings and chastises him for not seeing the bigger picture. However, more gangster swarm them before Toji can apprehend Kotaro, who uses the distraction to slip away.

Cut to vault. Once the ninjas are subdued, Ifrit goes to retrieve his heart. However, Kotaro redirects the fire Ifrit used and swipes the heart. As he instructs his subordinates to escape, Kotaro is caught off guard by the Protagonist, having heard about them from what he heard about the mess with Yog-Sothoth. They become annoyed when Kotaro says he left Toji to get attacked by the gangsters, but he bluffs an attempt to attack them before giving them the heart as payment for making sure Toji doesn't die. After returning the heart to Ifrit, the group reaches Toji just as he's about to be overwhelmed by the mobsters

Underground Escape (2) (Tokyo Casino)

As the group fights off the gangsters attacking Toji, Hakumen is leading the evacuation of the casino. However, this becomes harder as sections of Little Land of Wa are blocking key exits. As Hakumen laments over the imminent loss of her casino, Babalon approaches her and offers her assistance in getting her out.

Cut to casino basement. As the group fights their way through the wave of gangster, a still injured Toji tells them that they are merely disposable dummies used to attack a target. No longer feeling the need to hold back, Ifrit instructs the Protagonist to form a pact with him in order to properly restore his heart, allowing him to tap into his full strength and destroy the fake gangsters. As the structure around them continues to deteriorate, Ifrit leads the others as they carry Toji, eventually catching up with Shiro. After filling them in on the chaos on the upper levels, Shiro reveals that they are headed for an emergency bunker at the lowest level of the casino, where they'll hook up with Ryota and a second party. However, more fake gangsters are blocking the way, forcing them to take them out.

Underground Escape (3) (Tokyo Casino)

Once the group fights its way through the fake gangsters, they reach the bottom floor, where they find a staircase leading to a mysterious door. Assuming this is the emergency shelter, the Protagonist uses Hakumen's key to open it, only to discover it opens to an empty void.

Cut to Casino entrance. After clearing out everything in the casino, Ophion and Lucifuge realize the secret has something to do with the World of the Old Ones.

Cut to void. As Lil' Salomon bails out in panic, Shiro realizes the 'bunker' is actually a collision of worlds. Ryota, who had arrived ahead of them with Hanuman, whom he befriended after meeting in the kitchen, pulls them in. He informs them that the bunker is run by someone named Tsathoggua, causing Shiro to become shocked.

Overtures of a New Conflict (Tokyo Casino)

As the group floats toward a strange temple in the distance, Shiro reveals that Tsathoggua, the 'Sleeper of N', is considered famous among the lore of the Old Ones. However, once they land, they discover that Tsathoggua is a slob who doesn't like leaving his 'temple'. He leads the group to his room, where they recover from all the running they did. He tells them that, after winning at the casino, Hakumen brought him on to run the evacuation bunker. Shiro then asks Tsathoggua if he has any way to get them back to the surface, to which replies he can warp them out directly, though Hanuman has to bribe him with the release of a new game just to get him to go through with it.

As the group pops up outside Roppongi Station, Ophion and Lucifuge watch on, excited that their target has finally revealed himself since, as an Old One, Tsathoggua's powers aren't restricted by the App's power. With this knowledge, Ophion intends to use him as a conduit to attack the Game Masters for disrupting his 'supremacy'. Meanwhile, Claude and Snow approach the group, applauding the Protagonist for holding up their end of the bargain before asking that the Summoners keep an eye on Tsathoggua for the time being. Realizing the remaining Tycoons are now after him, Shiro is worried that Claude is trying to force the two guilds into a conflict for his own advantage, however, the Protagonist feels that their guild would look bad if they bailed on him after he helped them escape. As all parties involved go their separate ways, Shuichi and Duo approach Claude, wanting to hear what happened at the Tokyo Casino firsthand while passing along the information they gathered concerning Babalon.

Cut to Summoner's safehouse. As Tsathoggua gets settled into his new accoutrements, the Summoners discuss what will happen now that he's out in the open. While they lament that Toji has already left despite still being injured, Shiro is still worried that, once the Tycoons reform themselves, they'll target them just to get Tsathoggua.

Cut to skyscraper. As the mess involving Tokyo Casino winds down, two other members of the Tycoons, Licht and Melusine discuss what happened. With Hakumen now missing and Ophion on his power trip, Licht begins his own plans to re-establish his supremacy as the guild master of the Tycoons.
