- He is based on the protective Buddhist incarnation, or gongens of the same name.
- His backstory reflects the legend of Anchin and Kiyohime, where a monk named Anchin breaks the heart of a girl named Kiyohime, who then turns into a serpent and burns him alive inside a temple bell. In one version of the legend, Anchin is reborn as Kumano Gongen after his death.
