He worked as the personal tutor to a great Sumerian king in his homeland, and he continues to tutor on the side, balancing the job with his own studies. His students study longer and boost their grades without fail, particularly in the subjects of social studies, physical education, and law. Shamash's sunny disposition and stellar reputation as an instructor have people fighting over the privilege of having him as their tutor—and why wouldn't they? He is like an older brother to all, guiding beginners into unfamiliar subjects with a gentle touch, particularly law. His teaching style is based on the carrot and the stick, starting with easy problems and freely given praise before driving his students toward the toughest of academic walls. This philosophy is reflected in his personal life, where his hobbies are baking the delectable sweets of his homeland and undergoing the punishing physical training regimen of a soldier. While his grades are as excellent as one might expect, Shamash tends to disappear from time to time, earning the ire of his teachers. He has a reason for this, however—a mission, in fact. During his absences from school he prowls the city streets as a vigilante, passing judgment on those who violate the law while evading its just punishment. Adding to his mystery are rumors that hint he is part of a top-secret guild operating outside of Tokyo's Game with impunity. "Shamash wields a Whip and a Circle that signifies a solar orbit, a Sacred Artifact duo that represents the principle of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. The Rule this Artifact unleashes circumvents all barriers, physical and metaphysical, reaching out indefinitely to find its target. Once struck by the Rule, there can be no escape save for proving one's own nonexistence. The crimes of those affected are revealed under the light of justice, then reenacted so that pain inflicted may be measured as a reference for their sentencing. Those subjected to Shamash's judgment will receive a punishment that fits the crime, no matter the offense. Tokyo's underworld fear him as an avenger lurking in the darkness. Others seek him out in desperation, both for his talents in enacting justice and revenge, and for his teaching and coaching abilities. For instance, up-and-coming athletes come to him for private, personal training and for legal advice on contracts. Shamash too easily sympathizes with shows of raw emotion, robbing him of all initiative, so he keeps his distance from individuals with such personalities. On the other hand, he has a great affinity for anyone carrying the veritable world and ""all"" it contains on their shoulders, as well as those who openly admit to all of their crimes."
