Initially, Barguest's skillset fully orients him towards being a pure tank, applying Regen, Tenacity and Guts, a rather solid buff mix that makes him really hard to take down. His Charge skill even applies Curse, helping him with LB3’s bonus damage bit. Otherwise Curse is fairly easy to apply from other sources that aren’t his Charge, so he’s saved in that regard. Only downside to him is relying on Curse to deal some slightly higher damage, which isn’t much, pushing him towards an extremely narrow damage sponge role. It may still sound great, but it’s difficult to make damage sponges work in this game due to how the battle system works, Barguest is a case of a fantastic tanky unit anywhere outside of this game’s way of doing things.

Pros
+ LB1 Tenacity and LB2 Guts ensures he’s both enduring and has KO insurance, making him very reliable for taking hits along with Default.
+ Has increased damage if enemies are under Curse, a fairly common ailment that he can even apply through his Charge.
Cons
- Purely defensive, a formidable damage sponge that’ll do as is, but will need support if he wants to do anything past that.
- LB3 isn’t exactly fantastic past special damage, not always is enemy CP at play and its effect is not usually noticeable.
- Charge may help with his LB3, but the Curse bit to it is at its minimum effect, you go better off applying it through normal skills.
