Overview

☆3/☆5 Surtr
Thanks to his skills heavily patching up his downsides from his element, Surtr works considerably well as an impervious frontline tank who also works as a healer and defensive support thanks to his LB1 and LB3, which help both him and his allies very well in that area. Default is a nice bonus that allows him to progressively eat enemy buffs, potentially crippling some of them. If that’s not enough, he still gets Evasion every now and then so you can let him sponge as much damage as needed. His only downsides are lack of particularly high damage due to Berserk’s very low proc rate and his Charge attack range not helping much, even if his element is supposed to help a bit.
☆4 Valentine Surtr
Trading whatever armor he had on for an apron, Surtr (Valentine) shows his devotion to his children through rather offensive ways. As a fairly unique glass cannon archetype, he relies more on ailments than offensive buffs to deal formidable damage (that can still be perfectly increased with any buffs of the sort), among these ailments being a rather high-rate Charm thanks to Insight, this allows for a very swift shutdown of priority targets and amplify his own damage as he wishes. He also gets some other bonuses such as partial ailment immunity and a good way to apply Fervor to units around him and himself. The only problem there is that it’s tricky to manage his ailments on the targets he wants and if he doesn’t have them up and/or runs out of his buff, his damage will fall very short for a while. Nonetheless, his strong aspects are spectacular, making his flaws fall short in comparison in the end.

☆3/☆5 Surtr
Class: Tank, Healer, Defensive Support
Gameplay role:
Pros
+ Default is a considerable pseudo-Purge, proper management of it can cripple buff-reliant enemies considerably.
+ LB1 offers immediate endurance to him and his protected ally before any incoming damage.
+ LB2 Evasion ensures he won’t be caught offguard by any burst damage for thee turn he attains it.
+ LB3 helps him and his party very well thanks to a fantastic heal and defensive buff on demand, which is just as good on 3☆.
Cons
- One can argue he trades off too much damage for endurance as 5☆, Berserk certainly helps but it has low proc rate, it’s even worse on 5☆ due to attack range.
- Charge essentially only ignores Evasion in general, but due to the above point, it’ll take some backup for it to hurt, otherwise it’s decent at best.
☆4 Valentine Surtr
Class: Glass Cannon, Disruptive Support
Gameplay role:
Pros
+ A very unique form of damage output thanks to a rare offensive buff with Fervor and two special damage increases he meets very easily.
+ A higher than average Charm rate, paired with Insight makes him quite potent for a full shut-down of priority targets.
+ With this specific proc method, Status Barrier essentially makes him immune to incoming ailments if you manage it properly.
+ His Charge can be quite strong if you meet all the damage requirements, coming with the bonus of removing any and all enemy buffs at once.
Cons
- Relies a lot on his ailments to hurt, it can be somewhat difficult to manage at times if Charm doesn’t happen, this also extends to his Charge.
- Status Barrier isn’t foolproof, it may grant him essential immunity but if there’s more than one ailment applied, it won’t block them all.
- Most of his LB3 is a bonus you may not usually meet, having him die for it is far from a good tradeoff despite the great effects it has.
