Amatsumara is based on the eponymous kami of blacksmiths in Shinto Mythology, though he is also refered to as Amenomahitotsu no kami.
Amatsumara's name means "eye-divination" which some translate further to "one-eyed", a reference to a common occupational hazard for blacksmiths.  Fittingly enough one of Amatsumara's eyes is artificial.
Some interpretations of the tale credit Amatsumara with assisting in the creation of Yata no Kagami to lure Amaterasu from the cave.
